Only 25 Ever Made: Ultra-Rare McLaren Edition Mercedes SLR Listed For $700,000

If you’re in the market for an ultra-rare supercar with both Mercedes-Benz engineering and McLaren exclusivity, then this is your moment. RM Sotheby’s is listing one of only 25 McLaren Edition SLRs ever produced, and it could be yours—for a cool $700,000.

While that may sound expensive, it’s important to remember that the original SLR launched in 2004 with a price just under $500,000, and this McLaren Edition is far more exclusive—even rarer than the SLR Stirling Moss, of which 75 were built.

A Japan-Spec McLaren Gem, Number 14 of 25

This particular SLR is number 14 of the 25 units and was originally delivered to a customer in Japan in September 2005. Since then, it has accumulated 17,500 miles (around 28,200 km)—more than most collector cars of this rarity, but still modest given its 20-year lifespan.

What makes it special is its factory-upgraded “McLaren Edition” package, developed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) after production of the standard SLR ended in 2010.

What’s in the “McLaren Edition” Package?

Designed to enhance aerodynamics and performance, this package borrowed features from the SLR 722 Edition and added unique tweaks:

Upgrade AreaMcLaren Edition Features
Front AeroNew apron, larger splitter
Side ProfileEnlarged side intakes
Rear DesignActive rear wing, diffuser
Exhaust AreaMcLaren-style intake vents
ChassisLowered ride height (-10 mm)
WheelsLightweight 722 S-style alloys
Floor StructureCarbon-Kevlar front floor
EngineRumored tune over 640 hp

While exact engine specs remain unconfirmed, many believe the supercharged 5.4L V8 in this car pushes more than 640 hp, outpacing even the 722 Edition’s official figures.

Interior: Where Performance Meets Custom Luxury

The cabin features black leather with red contrast stitching, suede dashboard trim, and MSO logos on the headrests. A unique McLaren Edition plaque is fitted to the transmission tunnel.

Interestingly, this specific unit retains its original Alcantara steering wheel, whereas other McLaren Editions received a carbon-fiber replacement. Such differences only add to the uniqueness of each example.

Is $700K Too Cheap for This Kind of Rarity?

Believe it or not, $700,000 may actually be a steal. Another McLaren Edition SLR sold in the UK in 2023 for £623,750 (about $840,000 USD). Given rising interest in rare analog-era supercars, values for models like this are only expected to rise.

Why It’s Special: More Than Just a Supercar

Let’s not forget—this is a carbon-fiber-bodied, front-mid engine V8 supercar, co-developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren during their Formula 1 partnership. The SLR was always ahead of its time, with a 617 hp output and a 207 mph top speed, and the McLaren Edition brings it to an entirely different level.

Whether you’re a serious collector or just dreaming of what $700,000 can buy in 2024, this SLR McLaren Edition is one of the rarest and most desirable pieces of modern automotive history.
