Model Y Starts at Rs 61 Lakh as Tesla Enters India

After years of speculation and failed negotiations to establish a local manufacturing facility, Tesla has finally entered the Indian market. The American EV giant kicked off its official launch this week with plans to open two showrooms—one in Delhi and one in Mumbai—and begin deliveries of the Model Y this fall. However, despite the enthusiasm surrounding Tesla’s arrival, it’s the price tags that are making headlines across the country—and not for the right reasons.

Summary Points:

  • Tesla officially launches in India with the Model Y
  • Two initial showrooms: Delhi and Mumbai
  • Deliveries to start in fall 2025
  • Model Y Standard RWD priced at Rs 61.07 lakh (~$71,000)
  • Long Range RWD variant costs Rs 69.15 lakh (~$80,500)
  • Prices significantly higher than in the US and Europe
  • High import duties (up to 110%) drive up costs
  • Tesla still has no factory in India despite prior interest

A Long-Awaited Launch Without Local Manufacturing

Tesla’s expansion into India has been a drawn-out saga. Hopes were high when CEO Elon Musk expressed interest in establishing a local production plant, but negotiations with Indian authorities eventually stalled. As a result, Tesla opted for a limited market entry: importing vehicles and selling them through a minimal showroom presence.

The initial offering is focused entirely on the Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling SUV globally. The decision to go with the Model Y over more affordable models like the Model 3 is surprising, particularly considering India’s price-sensitive market. But even more surprising are the prices.

Tesla Model Y Pricing in India: Sticker Shock

Tesla’s entry-level Model Y Standard Range RWD in India is listed at Rs 61.07 lakh, equivalent to about $71,000 USD. That’s well above its price in Europe, where the same variant is available in Germany for €45,970 (~$53,700 USD). In the U.S., a similar model isn’t offered, but the more advanced Long Range AWD starts at just $46,630 including destination.

The Long Range RWD version of the Model Y—which delivers 387 miles (622 km) of WLTP range and goes from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds—is priced at Rs 69.15 lakh, or roughly $80,500 USD. Again, this is far higher than the €50,970 ($59,500) it costs in Germany.

Why Is Tesla So Expensive in India?

The steep pricing is not arbitrary. A major factor is India’s import tariff policy, which imposes duties of up to 110% on fully built imported vehicles. Since Tesla doesn’t manufacture locally, its cars fall squarely within this high-tax bracket.

By contrast, U.S. buyers benefit from domestic production and potential EV credits, while European buyers receive locally built units from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Germany. Indian customers, meanwhile, bear the brunt of logistics costs, customs duties, and a lack of government incentives.

Competitive Landscape: Tesla’s Challenge in India

While Tesla enjoys a near-luxury reputation in the U.S. and Europe, in India it enters a market dominated by affordable and compact vehicles. The Model Y’s premium pricing places it in the same bracket as high-end vehicles like the BMW M4 Competition xDrive, which itself costs a staggering Rs 1.56 crore (~$181,700) in India.

Indian EV buyers are also seeing increased options from local automakers such as Tata Motors, Mahindra, and new entries like BYD, all of which offer more affordable models tailored for Indian roads and budgets.

Tesla’s India Strategy: Limited Entry, High Risk

Tesla’s decision to proceed without local production is a calculated risk. While launching in India allows the brand to stake its claim in an emerging EV market, the pricing structure significantly limits its potential reach. With deliveries beginning in fall 2025, the automaker will test how much brand power and EV appeal can offset the pricing disadvantage.

Whether Tesla will revisit plans for a Gigafactory in India remains to be seen, but without it, wide-scale adoption appears unlikely. Government policies, incentives, and infrastructure developments will all play critical roles in determining the future of Tesla in India.

Conclusion: Tesla Arrives, But Is It Really for India?

Tesla’s long-awaited entry into India comes with excitement and skepticism. While the brand’s arrival marks a significant milestone for the country’s EV landscape, the sky-high prices driven by import tariffs and lack of local assembly make the Model Y more of a status symbol than a mass-market solution.

For Tesla to truly thrive in India, it will likely need to reignite discussions about local production, lower entry costs, and perhaps even consider bringing in more affordable models tailored for Indian consumers. Until then, Tesla remains in India—but at a cost.
