Nissan Expands Nismo Lineup with X-Trail SUV

Nissan’s performance division, Nismo, is broadening its portfolio by moving deeper into the SUV market. After recently unveiling a high-performance version of the Armada, the spotlight now shifts to the Nissan X-Trail Nismo, the Japanese-market sibling of the Rogue. This new variant introduces sharper styling, a sportier chassis setup, and reworked electronics—though it stops short of delivering a power upgrade.

Highlights at a Glance

  • Nissan X-Trail Nismo debuts in Japan with an aggressive bodykit and signature Nismo styling.
  • Aerodynamic tweaks reduce lift by 29% compared to the standard X-Trail.
  • Features Enkei 20-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires.
  • Cabin upgrades include Alcantara-trimmed Recaro seats and red-accented upholstery.
  • Powertrain remains the 211 hp e-Power hybrid, with no added horsepower.
  • Launch set for September 24 in Japan, with pricing starting at ¥5,416,400.

A More Aggressive Exterior

Visually, the X-Trail Nismo takes the facelifted Japanese X-Trail to a more aggressive level. It gains a bespoke bodykit consisting of a front splitter, side skirts, and a rear diffuser with an F1-style central brake light. Signature red highlights run across these elements, underlining its Nismo identity. Beyond aesthetics, these aerodynamic additions deliver real performance benefits, reducing lift by nearly 30% compared to the standard model.

The package is rounded off with a set of 20-inch Enkei aluminum wheels, engineered to improve brake cooling. They are paired with wider Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, giving the SUV more grip and stability. Buyers also get access to an exclusive Stealth Gray paint finish, contrasted by a Super Black roof and the hallmark Nismo red accents.

Sportier Interior Ambience

Inside, Nissan has created a cabin that reflects the performance branding. Upholstery is finished in black with red stitching, matched by trim inserts across the dashboard and doors. For enthusiasts seeking a racier atmosphere, optional Recaro sports seats are available, crafted in leather and Alcantara. These seats combine aggressive lateral support with heating and power recline functions, ensuring comfort is not sacrificed for sportiness.

Unlike the standard X-Trail, which can be specified with seven seats, the Nismo version is limited to a five-seat layout, highlighting its focus on driving rather than maximum utility.

Handling Over Power

While some may have expected the X-Trail Nismo to pack extra horsepower, Nissan has kept the hybrid e-Power drivetrain unchanged. It pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine (used as a generator) with dual electric motors, producing 211 hp and 525 Nm of torque. Although respectable, this output falls short of rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport Plug-in Hybrid, which delivers 320 hp.

Instead of boosting straight-line speed, Nismo engineers prioritized chassis and electronic enhancements. The X-Trail Nismo introduces Kayaba Swing Valve shock absorbers, a first for Nissan, designed to curb body roll without compromising ride comfort.

The e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system has been re-calibrated to send more torque to the rear axle and sharpen torque vectoring at the front, creating a more engaging experience on twisty roads. Additionally, the vehicle control module gains a revised Sport mode, tuned for quicker throttle response and tighter handling.

Market Positioning and Pricing

The X-Trail Nismo is set to reach Japanese dealerships on September 24, with prices ranging from ¥5,416,400 ($36,700) to ¥5,962,000 ($40,400). The optional Recaro seats add an extra ¥489,500 ($3,300).

At present, Nissan has not confirmed whether this model will remain a Japan-exclusive or if it will reach global markets. The U.S., where the X-Trail is sold as the Rogue, may need to wait until the next-generation Rogue arrives in 2026 to see a Nismo-badged variant.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Nissan X-Trail Nismo signals Nissan’s intent to bring its performance sub-brand into the SUV space. Rather than chasing headline horsepower figures, this model emphasizes chassis sophistication, handling precision, and distinctive styling.

Whether it remains a Japan-only proposition or spreads to markets like Europe and North America will depend on how Nissan chooses to position Nismo globally. For now, the X-Trail Nismo stands as a clear statement: Nissan is serious about making SUVs exciting again.
