Hyundai new president and CEO, José Muñoz, has expressed optimism regarding Elon Musk’s close relationship with Donald Trump, describing it as a potential positive for the automotive industry. Taking over on January 1, Muñoz emphasized Hyundai’s commitment to the U.S. market, viewing it as a cornerstone for the company’s growth strategy.
Confidence in U.S. Market Investments
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Muñoz explained that Hyundai’s significant U.S. investments were not influenced by the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentives but are part of a long-term strategy. “We haven’t invested in the U.S. because of IRA or because of incentives in general,” Muñoz stated. “We believe the U.S. market is the most important for us today and will continue to be in the future.”
A $5.5 Billion Commitment to EVs
Hyundai recently launched a $5.5 billion electric vehicle factory in Georgia, producing the Ioniq 5 and planning to expand its lineup to include five additional EVs from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, as well as hybrid models. The factory has an initial capacity of 300,000 vehicles annually, with room to grow to 500,000 units.

Musk’s Influence and the EV Industry
While Musk’s financial support for Trump and potential influence in shaping policies, such as the removal of federal EV tax credits, has raised questions in the industry, Muñoz remains unfazed. He believes Musk’s involvement could spur growth and competitiveness across the sector.
Strategic Resilience Beyond Incentives
Highlighting Hyundai’s approach, Muñoz noted, “It’s not a good policy to simply make an investment because of incentives, because they can come and go. Investing and localizing production ensures sustained growth and competitiveness, irrespective of shifting policies.”
Hyundai’s proactive approach, combined with a flexible manufacturing strategy, positions the company as a strong player in the rapidly evolving EV market. Muñoz’s optimism about industry collaboration underscores a broader vision for growth and innovation, even amidst shifting political dynamics.
