Mazda’s most popular SUV, the CX-5, is getting a major update for the 2026 model year — and the brand isn’t hiding it anymore. A leaked image of the upcoming third-generation CX-5 has surfaced online, revealing an all-new design and confirming the long-rumored addition of a hybrid powertrain. The redesigned CX-5 is expected to debut globally within the next few weeks, with a U.S. launch set for 2026.
Leaked Image Reveals Bold New Design
The photo, first spotted on Cochespias and shared by Car Design News on Instagram, shows the 2026 Mazda CX-5 completely uncovered. The design echoes previous prototypes seen during testing, with sharper headlights, a redesigned grille with a sleeker mesh pattern, and sculpted bumpers that enhance its premium appeal.
While the overall silhouette remains familiar, all body panels have been thoroughly revised. The unpainted plastic cladding around the wheel arches gives the SUV a slightly more rugged look, although higher trims may swap them out for body-colored elements.
The front headlights now curve into the grille — a styling trait reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz EQC — and the lower intake has been enlarged to add visual weight to the front end. Spy shots suggest the rear will feature slim LED taillights, exposed dual exhausts, and more aerodynamic tweaks.

Interior and Tech: Premium Push Continues
Inside, the CX-5 is expected to take a page from Mazda’s more upscale SUVs like the CX-90. That means higher-quality materials, a larger infotainment screen, and possibly a revised dashboard layout that brings it closer in line with premium competitors. The center console and digital displays are also likely to be upgraded to meet rising segment expectations.
First-Ever CX-5 Hybrid With SkyActiv-Z
For the first time ever, the Mazda CX-5 will feature a hybrid powertrain. The company has officially confirmed a self-charging hybrid system developed in-house, accompanied by the debut of the SkyActiv-Z gasoline engine. This next-gen powerplant is designed to boost fuel economy while maintaining the engaging performance Mazda is known for.
However, the SkyActiv-Z engine won’t launch until late 2027. Early hybrid versions of the new CX-5 will likely pair Mazda’s current engines with an electric motor and battery system, before switching over to the new tech down the road.
Competitive Landscape: Taking On the RAV4, CR-V, and Forester
The new CX-5 will face stiff competition in a crowded segment where hybrid SUVs are becoming the norm. Its chief rivals — the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester — all offer fuel-efficient hybrid options. With a mix of sleek styling, upgraded tech, and a promising hybrid system, Mazda is aiming to remain relevant and desirable in the hotly contested compact SUV category.
Expected Release Date and Availability
The current-generation CX-5 has been on sale since late 2016, making this redesign long overdue. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is expected to debut globally in the coming weeks, with a North American launch likely to follow shortly after. Pricing, trims, and full specs will be announced closer to the official reveal date.
