Opel’s Mokka GSE Brings 278 HP to the Compact SUV Game

Opel is stepping into the electric performance arena with confidence, introducing the Mokka GSE as its most dynamic electric model to date. Positioned as a high-performance alternative in the compact SUV segment, the Mokka GSE also marks the official debut of Opel’s new GSE sub-brand, focused on delivering electrified excitement without compromising practicality.

This electric crossover is more than just a facelift of the existing Mokka—it’s a purposeful and performance-driven variant that channels the spirit of rally-inspired hot hatches. With competitors like the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce already capturing attention in Europe, Opel’s move signals Stellantis’ commitment to cornering the electric enthusiast market.

Highlights at a Glance:

  • Opel’s most powerful electric model, producing 278 hp
  • 0–100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds
  • Debuts the performance-focused GSE sub-brand
  • Lowered suspension, stiffened chassis, and Alcon brakes
  • Visual upgrades include 20-inch aero wheels and yellow brake calipers
  • Uses a 54 kWh battery with range trade-offs for performance
  • Launch timing and pricing to be revealed soon

A Bolder, Faster Mokka

The Mokka GSE sets itself apart from the standard Mokka Electric through a host of visual and mechanical enhancements. Inspired by Opel’s GSE Rally prototype, this version wears aggressive bumpers, black aero inserts, GSE badging, and 20-inch alloy wheels with prominent yellow brake calipers. These sporty elements aren’t just cosmetic—they signal serious performance upgrades underneath.

Inside, the GSE builds on Opel’s modern cockpit layout but adds distinctive touches. The Alcantara-trimmed sport seats, aluminum pedals, yellow-and-white contrast stitching, and a reshaped steering wheel elevate the cabin’s sporty ambiance. The twin 10-inch displays now feature exclusive performance graphics, providing real-time driving metrics for an immersive experience.

Power and Handling: Built to Compete

Beneath the bold design, the Mokka GSE delivers real performance credentials. Powered by a single front-mounted electric motor, it produces 278 hp (207 kW) and 345 Nm of torque, sending power through a Torsen limited-slip differential. This setup allows the front wheels to manage traction effectively, especially during spirited driving.

Performance numbers are impressive:

  • 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph): 5.9 seconds
  • Top speed: 200 km/h (124 mph)

While not the most powerful electric vehicle in Stellantis’ stable, the Mokka GSE is quicker than the heavier Grandland Electric AWD, highlighting the benefits of its focused design.

Engineering Enhancements for Precision

Opel didn’t just add power; it refined the chassis to match. The suspension has been lowered by 10 mm, equipped with dual hydraulic dampers, and paired with a stiffer rear axle. Steering has been recalibrated for improved feedback, and Alcon performance brakes with 380 mm discs and four-piston calipers provide serious stopping power—rare in this segment.

These improvements ensure the Mokka GSE doesn’t just accelerate quickly but handles with agility, offering a driving experience that challenges traditional hot hatches despite its SUV form factor.

Battery and Range Trade-Offs

The Mokka GSE uses the familiar 54 kWh lithium-ion battery pack shared with the regular Mokka Electric. However, due to its performance focus and additional hardware, its WLTP range will be lower than the standard model’s 406 km (252 miles). While official figures haven’t been released, range-conscious buyers should expect a modest reduction.

Still, Opel has kept the weight under 1,600 kg (3,527 lbs), which is notable for a high-performance electric SUV and contributes to its nimble character.

A New Chapter for Opel Performance

The Mokka GSE is more than a high-output electric SUV—it’s a statement of intent from Opel. By launching the GSE sub-brand with this model, Opel is clearly redefining its performance DNA in an electric age. It blends the practicality of a crossover with the aggression and dynamics expected from traditional hot hatches.

With rivals already establishing themselves in the compact EV performance space, the Mokka GSE puts Opel firmly back in the conversation, offering a compelling mix of style, speed, and everyday usability.

Pricing and availability details for Europe and the UK (where it will wear Vauxhall branding) are expected in the coming months.

Performance Meets Everyday Practicality

In a market where electrification often means compromise, the Opel Mokka GSE aims to deliver the best of both worlds—hot hatch energy wrapped in an SUV silhouette. With sharp design, focused engineering, and real-world usability, it represents a bold step forward for Opel and the evolving identity of electric performance vehicles in Europe.
