Cupra has announced plans to retain combustion-powered versions of the Leon into the next decade while confirming its eventual evolution into an all-electric model. The future electric Leon will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), a cutting-edge architecture designed to support a range of next-generation EVs across the group.
Cupra Takes the Lead for the Leon
The transition to an EV-only could also signal a significant shift in branding, with Seat’s version of the car potentially phased out. This would leave Cupra as the exclusive steward of the iconic nameplate, further solidifying its identity as a performance-focused brand.
When the EV Leon debuts, it will join Cupra’s growing electric lineup, which already includes models like the Tavascan, Raval, and Born. Although specific details about the electric Leon remain scarce, its SSP underpinnings hint at shared battery and powertrain options with other VW Group EVs, promising high efficiency and performance.

Combustion Models Still Going Strong
For enthusiasts of internal combustion engines (ICE) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), there’s no immediate need to worry. Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths has assured that the current combustion-powered Leon will remain in production “well into the next decade.” This timeline provides ample opportunity for buyers to enjoy the ICE-powered Leon before the transition to electric is complete.
Griffiths also hinted at potential facelifts and product improvements to keep the Leon and its platform sibling, the Cupra Formentor, competitive for years to come. He acknowledged that while combustion models are still relevant, their days are numbered. “The next generation of Leon will definitely be electric,” Griffiths emphasized.
Refreshed Design Keeps the Current Leon Competitive
In April of last year, Cupra introduced a facelifted version of the compact car, showcasing several notable updates:
- Sharper Front Design: A more aggressive front fascia featuring redesigned triangular matrix LED headlights and an enlarged grille.
- Updated Rear Styling: Refreshed taillights paired with an illuminated Cupra badge for a striking look.
The current Leon remains available in both hatchback and Sportourer estate forms, but with estates losing favor to SUVs, there’s no guarantee this body style will return in the EV version.
Looking Ahead: A Future-Ready Cupra
The Cupra Leon is poised for an exciting transformation, bridging the gap between its combustion-powered past and an electrified future. With the electric version not expected for nearly a decade, Cupra ensures there’s still time for petrolheads to enjoy the thrill of ICE and PHEV driving. Meanwhile, the brand’s commitment to innovation and bold design suggests the electric Leon will be a worthy successor, helping to define the next era for Cupra.
